What is IVF?
In Vitro Fertilization(IVF) is one of ART processes of Fertilization by manually combining a woman’s egg and sperm in a laboratory dish, and then transferring the embryo to the uterus. simply said it is a process by which the woman’s egg is fertilized by a man’s sperm outside the body.
In order for pregnancy to occur an egg has to be released from the ovary and unite with a sperm. Normally this union called fertilization occurs within the fallopian tube which joins the uterus (womb) to the ovary.
However, in ivf, the union occurs in a laboratory after eggs and sperm have been collected, embryos are then transferred to the uterus to continued growth.

IVF Fertility Treatment Process and Procedure.
IVF Treatment process here at our Lagos fertility facility, involves first proper evaluation of a client’s case by one of our Fertility Doctors to ascertain the peculiarity of the client’s case, proper explanation of treatment option and collection of consent form.
Then undergoing of required preliminary set of tests/screenings, administering of fertility drugs, monitoring of cycle, collection of eggs mixing of egg and sperm together outside the woman’s body in culture or test tube. Resulting embryos are left to grow and the best embryo 2-3 is then transferred into the woman’s womb. Any remaining embryo of good quality may be frozen for future use.
First you walk into our Fertility Centre:
One of our Fertility doctors evaluate your case.(IVF/Fertility treatment procedures/processes are individualized).
This evaluation normally includes the examination of possible cause of infertility in the couple.
Couples will be issued with a consent form and information sheet about their IVF treatment.
Next, is the required preliminary set of tests(screening) after a successful evaluation.
Some of the preliminary Test that are normally taken includes
- AMH (Anti Mullerian hormone).
- SFA (Seminal fluid analysis).
- Vaginal Ultrasonography.
- Sonohysterography or sonohysterosalpingography (HSG with referral) to confirm your uterine ability is normal.
- Infections screening test (HIV, HbsAg, VDRL).
After the above series of test’s, the woman undergoes ovaries stimulation using hormonal drugs, to regulate egg production and maturation.
The aim is to grow several matured eggs rather than a single egg that normally develops each month. With the introduction of cryopreservation excess embryos can be stored so that woman does not have to go through stimulation and egg collection each cycle.
A number of different drugs and protocols are used in IVF treatment, because the treatment is individualized, couple may find out that their drugs and protocol differs from other couples.
Monitoring of cycle
This is done through series of ultrasound scans.to determine the right time for egg removal.
The aim of monitoring the cycle is to check the development of the follicles and the lining of the uterus to adjust the dose of the drugs and to time the HCG Injection. Each patient is different.
You will be told how many times you need to attend the clinic, to access how you are responding to the injections and to adjust the dose of the injections accordingly. The development of the follicle is routinely monitored using serial vaginal ultrasound scan.
Egg collection is usually performed in the morning or early afternoon approximately 36hrs after the HCG injection. This process requires that you will be put to sleep using mild anesthesia.
Vaginal ultra sound guided egg collection is the technique we use at Fusion Nest Fertility Center. It is a minor and safe procedure. A vaginal ultra sound probe with a fine hollow needle attached is inserted into the vaginal under ultrasound guidance; the needle is then attached from the vaginal wall into the ovary to suck out the fluid from the follicle which contains the egg.
After the egg collection the patient might experience slight pain, a pain killer is often helpful bleeding should be minimal if any at all.
On the day of egg collection the male partner is asked to provide semen sample.
The sperm is washed in culture medium and prepared in order to separate the sperm from the seminal plasma. The eggs are collected into a specially prepared culture medium and examined under microscopes and graded for maturity. The eggs are then placed in the incubator for about 3-8hrs before it’s mixed with sperm.
It takes about 18hrs for the eggs to be fertilized and about twelve hours later the fertilized egg starts to divide into two cells and subsequently into four and so on. After about 48 to 72hrs from egg collection the embryo will usually consist of 4-8 cells each and ready for replacement into the woman’s uterus.
This is quite a simply and usually pain free procedure. The cervix is cleaned and embryos suspended in drop of culture medium are loaded in a fine plastic catheter with a syringe on one end. The procedure is guided by ultrasound scan during embryo transfer appears to increase pregnancy rate..

Luteal Phase Support
Once the egg has been removed, the follicles start to produce hormone called progesterone to stimulate the endometrium and prepare it for implementation.
The amount produced by the follicles is usually not enough to support the uterine lining. Hormone supplements are usually given for two weeks or longer to assist implantation. The choice of luteal support will be discussed by your fertility specialist.
